Springhill Winery in Bloomfield is the oldest Winery in Kentucky; Founded in 1990. Which just so happens to be the year I was born. Coincidence? I think not! But it is so much more than just that. The winery is located on a notable pre civil war plantation where a confederate skirmish ended in the death of the owner, JR Jones and a rebel soldier. Then retaliation executions of two confederate prisoners. The "Witness Tree" is near the winery. The state arborist declares it was standing when Abe Lincoln was born in 1808. The tasting room will sometimes show a short video featuring the tree and the events it has witnessed

throughout the years. The plantation home was once a Bed and Breakfast ran. It is nestled in Historic Bloomfield which is just outside of Bardstown. Otherwise known as the Bourbon Capital of the world.

Springhill is known for their red wines, some estate grown. More specifically their Cabernet Franc and Chambourcin. But it doesn't stop there. "Prissy" is one of the best pomegranate wines I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. A fruit wine that I personally think is difficult to perfect without being too tart. "Blueberry Thrill" is sweet without being overpowering. I am not a big fan of peach. But their Wineshine makes me reconsider.

Upon arriving, we were greeted by owner and wine maker, Eddie O'Daniel. Eddie is extremely passionate about not only the wine making process but also about the history of the grounds in which it sits. Eddie is as hospitable as they come. He is happy to educate you about all Springhill has to offer and make suggestions along the way. He was inviting, encouraging and is responsible for bringing this blog to life. Eddie and I shared easy conversation. He suggested I put my love for writing and literature to good use and start blogging about my wine adventures.

He was open to my suggestions as well. He recently partnered with other Bardstown Wineries to host a mini wine festival at McIntyre Winery. Which resulted in over 900 people liking them on Facebook and the event had well over 400 in attendance. One of my many complaints I shared with Eddie was that Indiana hosts far more wine walks and festivals than we do here. They will host small business Saturdays in boutiques and shoppes where wineries will allow tastings. Wine can later be picked up at a designated pickup location. I asked Eddie why we can't do more of those events to spread the word about all of our fantastic wineries. Eddie, being a man of his word, made it happen.

He will also be debuting a wine that was blended specially for the Holidays. A red and white to be called the "Bluegrass Trifecta". He partnered with Rising Sons and Prodigy to bring this delight to life. I cannot wait to try it!

Starting this weekend and ending on 12/31/2018, Springhill is offering 20% off all wines on Sundays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Well, as promised, this is my blog dedicated to Springhill Winery. Hopefully, my first of many to come.
