Snowy day at Talon Winery

Talon was the first winery I had a membership with. When I was married and lived in Shelbyville, Kentucky I frequented there. But when I moved away I closed my membership and hadn't been back in quite some time. It was also the first place my partner in crime ever did a wine tasting. And now he is a member there. For Valentine's Day one year, I won a private party for 20 at Talon and I actually hosted my birthday party there. Yes, I'm a grown woman and still have a party every single year. I'm a queen! I deserve to be celebrated. In recent years I have carried on this tradition and held my parties at Huber's (Indiana) and Millanova here in Mount Washington.

The wines have evolved but I'm not sure there's room for improvement as far as the ambiance or hospitality is concerned. Talon has two locations. One in Shelbyville and the larger of the two is in Lexington. I've not yet had the opportunity to venture to their Lexington location but hope to soon. The staff is some of the friendliest and most conversive out of the local wineries I have visited on a more regular basis.

Did I mention they sell Larry's cheeses there? I cannot help it. I love snacking. I'm a huge foodie so wineries get extra brownie points if I have the opportunity to snack while visiting. They also serve beer in the event that someone in your group isn't fond of wines. For example, my other half. He is slowly but surely becoming more open to trying different wines and wineries. But before me, he was definitely more of a bourbon and beer kinda guy.

The Equestrian Series VIII is a medium bodied red wine that is aged in a Kentucky White Oak Bourbon Barrel. It is smooth enough to drink a whole bottle. I would enjoy it with a pork tenderloin and seasonal vegetables. Forbidden is a spiced apple wine with cinnamon aftertaste that blows Huber's spiced apple out of the water! Toasted was my favorite though. An Estate Chambourcin aged in Bourbon Barrels that would pair well with BBQ. I really enjoyed their Blackberry Moscato because it wasn't overly sweet or bubbly. And last but certainly not least, Clint and I drank an entire bottle of the Diamond. Which is sweet and refreshing.

Rating on a scale of 1-5 corks:

Ambiance: 4

Hospitality: 4

Wines: 3
